Founded in 2022 as a family venture, Harmeet saffron cultivation startup is leading a unique approach to indoor farming in India. Harmeet, a full-time architect by profession, comes from a family with ancestral land that has been farmed for many years. Though his family was not new to agriculture, Harmeet introduced them to a specialized method of aeroponics indoor farming. Some time ago, Harmeet's journey began with research revealing that India’s saffron demand is largely unmet domestically, with only 30% of the supply grown in Kashmir and the remaining 70% imported from Iran. Recognizing an opportunity, he explored the concept of indoor saffron cultivation and decided to grow saffron at home. The catch? Indoor saffron needs no soil or field. With an initial investment of approximately Rs 5 lakh, Harmeet set up the necessary infrastructure, including saffron seeds, a cold storage facility, chiller units, racks, humidifier, and trays. Despite facing skepticism and doubts from others, Harmeet and his family remained steadfast, focused on their goal. In past years, they successfully cultivated saffron. Today, their efforts have drawn interest from people nationwide who seek something like innovative in saffron farming. While he laid the groundwork for the venture and oversees the business, his mother and aunt work tirelessly to look after the daily operations. The family wants to encourage women, especially housewives, to take up something like this and become independent. Not only has this venture become a valuable source of additional income for his family, but they are also providing training to others, especially those in search of local income opportunities.
